Resources and Tools for Bape legit checks

I. Required photos

II. Legit check guidelines and tips

III. Where to purchase legit Bape products

What can we authenticate?

Bape - just about anything, past or present.

Please note that there may be a degree of difficulty for vintage items (90's - early 2000's), as well as Aape by A Bathing Ape products.

Billionaire Boys Club - season 0 through season 11 / 12 (2004 - 2011)

What can we --not-- authenticate?

Typically, items that are not manufactured by Bape themselves.

Items such as Bape x Adidas, Bape x Comme des Garcons and Bape x Puma, including apparel and sneakers.

In most cases, these items are highly difficult to authenticate as they are made to different standards, and the things we usually rely on for legit check purposes are either not present or vastly different from Bape-manufactured products.

Why can we not authenticate BBC items post-seasons 11 / 12?

Bape and BBC were always manufactured in the same factory - that is, until 2011, when Nigo sold Bape to a Chinese fashion conglomerate. After the sale, there was a disruption in manufacturing. BBC was stuck in limbo. Production returned after a lengthy hiatus, but in different factories around the globe - China, SE Asia, India and even South America. Quality of BBC products dropped considerably, and quite frankly, I was no longer interested in the brand.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

As I am not aware of any standard of quality for newer BBC items, your best bet for authenticating BBC may just be proof of purchase.

I. Required photos

The more photos, the better.

Photos must be large, clear and not blurry.

Upload photos to www.imgur.com or any other free hosting site.

Copy & paste the URL or BBCode. Please don't use forum attachments.

You can also directly link to the listing / auction / etc.

T-Shirts

● Garment in full view, preferably laying flat
● Neck tag / Size tag
● Ape face tag

Sweatshirt / Hoodie / Jacket

● Garment in full view, preferably laying flat
● Neck tag / Size tag
● Ape face tag
● Care tag

Bottoms

● Garment in full view, preferably laying flat
● Waistband tag / Size tag
● Ape face tag
● Care tag

Sneakers

● Shoes in full view
● Straight on shots - side profile, front, back, insoles
● Avoid awkward angles as they make it difficult to determine overall shoe and star shape

Non-Essential:

Misinformation has lead many to believe the gold tag and YKK zippers are signs of authenticity. They are not.

We don't rely on these things to determine authenticity. Photos aren't necessary.

II. Legit check guidelines and tips

You do not have to legit check every little thing on Yahoo Japan or Rakuten. While there may be fakes present on these marketplaces, they are few and far between, and typically stick out like a sore thumb, These sites are generally safe. There is no reason to be paranoid or overly cautious.

You should legit check everything on eBay, Facebook, Instagram, depop, mercari and other online marketplaces. These sites are littered with fakes and you should exercise extreme caution.

Grailed is generally a safe place to purchase Bape. This site is monitored by experienced moderators.

You can protect yourself by making sure the listing has clear pictures of all the details, most importantly the tags (neck, sleeve, care tags) as these things are vital for legit checks. Refer to section one of this thread for required photos.

Some tips for spotting fakes:

(applies to all listings or websites that are not Japanese shopping sites)

Has the seller sold multiples of the same item?

Are more still available?

Are all sizes available?

Is the price less than retail, sometimes significantly so?

Does the seller claim the item is a "Factory Sample?"

Does the seller ship from China, Hong Kong or SE Asia?

These are all red flags.

If you answered yes, then the item is surely FAKE.

99.9% positive feedback? Doesn't matter!

Furthermore...

The Bape plastic dustbag and / or camo tags are not indicators of an authentic Bape product.

Fakes have included these things for many years.

The gold foil ape face tag is not an indicator of an authentic Bape product.

Fakes have had this tag attached for many years.

A receipt is not an indicator of an authentic Bape product.

Fake receipts do exist. Fake receipts appear to be issued from a Japan store and usually say "A Bathing Ape Japan" invoice or receipt, along with a list of products purchased in bulk (and usually for incorrect retail prices).

In rare cases, sellers have supplied fake receipts from Bape Store New York and Selfridges.
